Our 16 year old went to write their driving test and was told they must reveal if they have any medical diagnosis. Being honest, they did so, which then meant they were not allowed to write the test and the entire file had to go to medical review … which takes months – because government bureaucracy is SLOW. The entire ordeal has been shocking and eye opening for our child.

Comment on MAHA Commission Means Fear, Stigma, Health Threats for Two-Thirds of ADDitude Readers by ADDsecret https://www.additudemag.com/maha-commission-reactions/#comment-382356 Sun, 18 May 2025 17:25:03 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?p=375096#comment-382356 My response is directed at job applicants: do NOT reveal your ADD or ADHD condition to any prospective employers. You don’t think that discrimination against job seekers who have ADD or ADHD doesn’t exist in the workplace? I am a man in his retirement years and I know all about it, so please listen to me because I’ve had it happen to me at least twice in my long career. I am on your side and trying to impart some sincere helpful advice.

One time I was discovered by a pre-employment psych test. On another occasion I was was denied a position because of a hunch by an HR director.

Want to file a complaint withe the Fair Employment Commission? Forget about it! The merciless pogrom to “reduce government waste” has slashed the jobs of any government administrators who might have helped you. You are left to your own wits to disguise your condition.

In the current situation cabinet officers have been appointed because of personal loyalty rather than experience and competence. Critical and promising research into breast cancer and Alzheimer’s has been cut short while scarce remaining resources have been redirected down rabbit holes trying to find links between MMR and other vaccines vs. autism and ADD/ADHD. This is not only inspired stupidity but it is cruelty based on prejudice and ignorance.

I wish you well in your job search and GBU.

Comment on “I Never Felt Like an Adult. A Late ADHD Diagnosis Explained Why.” by BlueBonnet https://www.additudemag.com/i-dont-feel-like-an-adult-adhd/#comment-381925 Tue, 13 May 2025 15:57:01 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?p=375590#comment-381925 Lynda – Your beautifully written article really touched my heart. Never forget, what those proudly logical humans with the ice-cold dead eye don’t have is your ability to be so expressive, heartfelt, and humor-filled, all at once! I’m 62 now, late-diagnosed as well. It’s a mix of emotions to get a diagnosis, isn’t it? Understanding, relief, grief for the past that could have been if you had known, and gratitude for being able to joyfully experience the world, and bounce in a bouncy house! My neighbors put one up annually at Easter for their grandkids on their front lawn. I always ask if I can bounce in it….they say neither “yes” nor “no”, just laugh – they don’t think I’m serious!
Thanks to you for sharing your writing gift, and ADDitude for publishing it. I wish you the very best in life and have FUN growing outward!

Not only do I live with ADHD, Autism and Dyslexia but I have a physical disability as well. My neurodiversity only got diagnosed last year, however I made the decision based on not wanting to pass on my physical disability, my feelings of constant overwelm, focus on my career (which I love), and a (now ex) husband that was a manchild that wouldn’t have been much help.

Comment on “RFK, Jr., Is Spreading a Dangerous, Ignorant Myth About Autism” by Jason S https://www.additudemag.com/rfk-autism-neurodiversity-acceptance/#comment-381787 Wed, 07 May 2025 20:20:56 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?p=376137#comment-381787 Again, why is ADDitude publishing such an awful, politically biased, article? The data has been there long before RFK jr was ever in charge of anything. A 2011 article in Psychology today said, “Fifty-two divorced parents who have a child with autism responded to a survey regarding their perceptions of divorce and autism. While 78% of respondents said they divorced after their child was diagnosed, and overwhelmingly 76% of the respondents said that autism was not the primary cause of their divorce. Although the majority of respondents did not consider autism a main cause of divorce, 50% did consider autism to be a contributing factor for the divorce.” That’s just one article and it sounds like families are being destroyed. How much more difficult is it to be a single parent of a child or children with Autism? Of course “child with Autism does not equal divorce”, there are many contributing factors. We should not demonize someone who is bringing national attention to the disorder and stating they want to help find a cure. The author of this article is pushing a political agenda and not capitalizing on the fact that our government is finally giving Autism more attention than any billboard ever has.

Never in my life have I ever read something so offensive to children and adults with ASD or their families. You want to these amazing people as if they are broken toys or better yet, someone to put on a “watch list”. I am not only the parent of an Autistic child but I am a Special Education Teacher that will tell you right now, RFK Jr., you are pathetic. Do us all a favor, study and research before making such ridiculous decisions!

I must agree with most of the other comments. Are these anonymous authors saying it’s not a disability and we should be able to “just do it” without any assistance or treatment, without flaws or mistakes? This sounds like it was written by those who don’t think ADHD is real.

Comment on Setting the Record Straight About ADHD and Its Treatments by cwmilkey https://www.additudemag.com/adhd-article-new-york-times/#comment-381673 Sun, 04 May 2025 20:40:29 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?p=375231#comment-381673 Thank you Attitude Magazine to effectively responding to this article that was not based on any facts that I’ve seen. I am a psychiatric nurse practitioner and treat ADHD and was appalled at the misinformation and very surprised that the NY Times would print such an article. None of his article reflected current research of ADHD accurately. My first feeling in reading this article was incredible frustration and fear that being printed in the New York Times would justify the the lies/misinformation that the author had written. I subscribe to both Attitude Magazine and NY Times and respect both organizations but feeling a little uneasy about what NY Times printed about ADHD. I am hoping that this is not a foundation article that Robert F Kennedy Jr manipulated in being printed as I’ve read his about opposition to ADHD and the medication used to treat it. Robert F Kennedy Jr does not base his beliefs on sound research and anyone in the medical field knows this. Again thank you Attitude Magazine for your detailed response to the article that was published in the NY Times. Charlene Milkey APRN

Comment on MAHA Commission Means Fear, Stigma, Health Threats for Two-Thirds of ADDitude Readers by Elaine - ImpactADHD.com https://www.additudemag.com/maha-commission-reactions/#comment-381544 Thu, 01 May 2025 20:25:24 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?p=375096#comment-381544 Thank you for sharing this. Our neurodiverse community has been under attack from misinformation that dates back decades to the late 1980s when the Church of Scientology launched a smear campaign against ADHD. At that time, The Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) (a lobbying and advocacy organization founded in 1969 by the Church of Scientology and psychiatrist Thomas Szasz) was widely recognized as a front group for the Church of Scientology, with the Church acting as its primary sponsor and financial backer.

The Church of Scientology provided financial support and organizational infrastructure for CCHR’s campaigns, including those specifically targeting ADHD diagnoses and the use of medications like Ritalin.

CCHR’s tax-exempt status was negotiated as part of an agreement with the Church of Scientology International and the Religious Technology Center, which assumed responsibility for CCHR’s tax liabilities, underscoring the financial integration between the Church and CCHR.

CCHR, with Church of Scientology backing, led and funded public awareness campaigns, legal actions, and lobbying efforts against the psychiatric diagnosis of ADHD and the use of stimulant medications in children.

These campaigns include lawsuits, such as the early federal suit filed by LaVarne Parker, which was part of a broader strategy orchestrated and supported by Scientology to create public uproar over Ritalin and ADHD.

CCHR organized community meetings, distributed literature, and staged exhibits (such as “Psychiatry: An Industry of Death”) to promote the Church’s anti-psychiatry agenda, specifically targeting ADHD and its treatments.

Today, we continue to deal with the impact of that campaign and the stigma and fear it created. Hundreds of thousands of children were either not diagnosed or not treated when providers and schools became fearful of being targeted.

For more info, if you’re interested:
he original lawsuits targeting ADHD diagnosis and medication were filed as follows:

One of the earliest and most prominent cases was filed by LaVarne Parker in federal court against an Atlanta-area school district, several physicians, and the American Psychiatric Association. This lawsuit was filed in 1987 and dismissed in 1988.

Similar individual lawsuits were filed in Minnesota, Maryland, Massachusetts, and California in the late 1980s, with one notable California case filed in November 1987.

The first major class action lawsuit was filed in District Court for Cameron County, Texas, on May 1, 2000, by attorney Andy Waters. This case was later moved to federal court in Dallas.

Additional class action lawsuits with similar allegations were filed in California and New Jersey in September 2000, and another in Puerto Rico in February 2001

Comment on MAHA Commission Means Fear, Stigma, Health Threats for Two-Thirds of ADDitude Readers by Jason Schweitzer https://www.additudemag.com/maha-commission-reactions/#comment-381537 Thu, 01 May 2025 17:10:09 +0000 https://www.additudemag.com/?p=375096#comment-381537 It’s very disconcerting to see the unbalanced position that ADDitude took in this article. Last I checked, neither ADHD or Autism have ever been accused of discrimination and so I wish there had been an effort to express a more balanced view of MAHA. I’m excited that we finally have someone in government who sees ADHD and Autism as healthcare issues to be addressed at the national level in hopes of providing greater treatment and possible prevention opportunities. Honestly, I’m tired of trying to figure this out on my own. The professionals, bless their hearts for trying, that I’ve sought support from have really had very little to offer in the way of relief or coping and they keep putting it back on me and/or my kid as to “what would you like to do?” Medication after medication, side effect after side effect, therapy appointment after therapy appointment, and back to square one. Not looking for “the pill” that will solve all problems, but guessing day to day sometimes on how to cope with a symptom isn’t a strategy. I do appreciate the freedom to choose strategies and I am the expert on my kid, but I am not the expert on the disorder and hopefully something great for ADHD and Autism will come from MAHA.
